Welcome to the April edition of the Hood College Counselor Connection! As the school year is winding down, we’re wishing you and your students the best of luck with registration, college placements, and final exams.

Here at Hood, we’re experiencing some exciting changes as well! We are thrilled to welcome a new provost to the Hood College community for the 2016-17 school year. Dr. Debbie Ricker, currently the dean of academic services at York College in Pennsylvania, will be beginning her journey as Hood’s chief academic officer on July 1. For more than 20 years, Dr. Ricker has served in various administrative roles at York College, where she also taught courses in the biological sciences and helped create the college’s new general education program, Generation Next. Dr. Ricker’s academic and administrative experiences and love for the liberal arts make her the perfect candidate to take on this role at Hood, and our campus community is excitedly awaiting her arrival.

Another change on campus for next school year is a new housing policy. Beginning this fall, Hood will have two residence halls that are specifically reserved for freshmen students, which will allow greater opportunities for first-year programming and will give new students a great way to meet and socialize with the rest of the class of 2020.

The Hood College community is also celebrating senior Lydia Emory, who was recently awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. Emory will be teaching in Madrid beginning in August, and she will also be working with students during a three-month Model United Nations camp. A Spanish and Global Studies double major, Emory studied in both Seoul, South Korea and Seville, Spain during her time at Hood.
