Chair of the Board Scholarship Opportunities

November 1, 2017  |  Admissions, Financial Aid  |  No Comments

Last February, we invited 52 academically outstanding high school seniors to Hood College’s campus for our first annual Scholars Day, where they were interviewed by faculty and staff members. Five of these students (hailing from Florida, North Carolina, and Maryland) were awarded our Chair of the Board Scholarship, which covers the full cost of tuition for the four years of their attendance.

We are happy to announce that this program will continue, and we are currently reviewing applications to find the next class of Chair of the Board Scholars. This year, we will be awarding four full-tuition scholarships, but all Scholars Day participants will receive significant scholarship funding in addition to the merit scholarship offered to them at the time of admission. Additionally, an experiential learning stipend will be offered to all Scholars Day participants.

Honors to Honors

The Hood College Honors Program provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to expand their knowledge base and critical thinking skills through an interdisciplinary exploration of topics. All transfer students who have successfully completed two years of an honors program at another college before transferring to Hood will be automatically invited to join the Honors Program at the junior level without having to complete the first- and second-year course requirements. Honors students will also be awarded a $2000 renewable scholarship for their participation in the program.

In order to complete the Honors Program, transfer students must complete at least 9 credits in honors courses at the 300-level or above, including at least one HON470 seminar. Additionally, all students in the Honors Program must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language through at least the 202 level.

The Final Countdown

April 3, 2017  |  Admissions, News  |  No Comments

May 1 is just around the corner, and as students are making their final college decisions, we’re hard at work getting ready for the class of 2021 to join our campus community!

This Saturday, April 8, we are welcoming about 160 families to campus for Admitted Students’ Day, which will allow prospective students to meet faculty and staff members, sit in on “minicourses” of their choosing, explore campus, and get to know other potential members of their class. About 50 of the prospective students attending this event have also registered to spend the night on campus the night before (April 7), and they will be able to participate in a fun evening, including having dinner and a mocktail hour with our current student leaders! If you are currently working with students who have been accepted to Hood College for the fall 2017 semester, please encourage them to sign up for Admitted Students’ Day here.

On March 25, we hosted our annual Spring Open House, and it was a great success! Prospective students ranging from high school freshmen to seniors attended the event with their families, and they were able to interact with faculty and staff members from every department on campus, hear from parents of current students and recent graduates, talk with a panel of current students about life on campus, and more!

Although the Spring Open House is over, we will be holding large group presentations and tours from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturday, April 22 and Saturday, April 29. Additionally, we are open for tours and meetings with an admission counselor every weekday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with additional visit times available during the weeks of Spring Break for Frederick and the surrounding counties in Maryland.

We love to have groups visit campus, so feel free to contact our office at 301-696-3400 to arrange a visit for your students!

By the way, if this year is like most, you may be faced with students who have suddenly changed their plans for the fall and are looking for other options. We project that we will have openings for the fall class beyond May 1 in many of our programs and for campus housing. If you have a student who might be interested in Hood College, please have them contact us soon at 301-696-3400 or
