Welcome! November News and Updates

November 1, 2017  |  News  |  No Comments

Alumnae_Hall_SM-560x361Happy November 1, and welcome back to the Hood College Counselor Connection! This year marks the 125th anniversary of Hood College, and we are thrilled to be celebrating the College’s history as we look toward the future and continue to improve our community.

We are now in the process of reviewing applications for next year’s incoming class, and we will continue to review applications and award financial aid on a rolling basis throughout this academic year. Students are currently being reviewed for both Spring and Fall 2018 admission, and all students are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships.

In addition to celebrating our 125th anniversary, we are excited to announce the following news from Hood College:

  • We recently signed enrollment agreements with Frederick Community College, Carroll Community College, and Montgomery College to make it easier for transfer students to join our community. We look forward to adding to this list throughout the year!

  • Beginning with the class of 2022, residential students will be required to live on campus for their first three years at Hood. To facilitate the implementation of this new policy, we are in the planning stage for construction of a new residence hall.

  • Yaa Gyasi, author of Homegoing, recently visited campus as part of our first-year read program for a discussion, Q&A session, and a book signing event.

  • Crystal Griner ‘06 was awarded the President’s Medal for Obligation by our president, Andrea Chapdelaine, Ph. D. in a ceremony held on campus in late September. Griner, a Capitol Police Officer, was recognized for her heroic actions when a gunman opened fire during a congressional baseball practice earlier this year.

If you are a member of a professional organization that needs a meeting location, we would love to host your event! Please contact Elizabeth Gomer ( for more information.

Chair of the Board Scholarship Opportunities

November 1, 2017  |  Admissions, Financial Aid  |  No Comments

Last February, we invited 52 academically outstanding high school seniors to Hood College’s campus for our first annual Scholars Day, where they were interviewed by faculty and staff members. Five of these students (hailing from Florida, North Carolina, and Maryland) were awarded our Chair of the Board Scholarship, which covers the full cost of tuition for the four years of their attendance.

We are happy to announce that this program will continue, and we are currently reviewing applications to find the next class of Chair of the Board Scholars. This year, we will be awarding four full-tuition scholarships, but all Scholars Day participants will receive significant scholarship funding in addition to the merit scholarship offered to them at the time of admission. Additionally, an experiential learning stipend will be offered to all Scholars Day participants.

“Blazer for a Day” is an extended visit option that allows students to sit in on a class of their choosing, eat lunch in the dining hall, take a student-led tour of campus, and meet with an admission counselor. Visits are customizable, and can be created to include meetings with the financial aid department, our career center staff, professors and coaches, among other options.

Fall Open House

This fall’s remaining Open House will be held on November 11, beginning at 8:30.
