First-Year Programs

FYR1Transitioning from senior year of high school to freshman year of college is a big step for every student. At Hood College, we have created a network of programs, including the First-Year Read and First-Year Seminars, to help ease that transition for our students and ensure success and positive growth throughout their college careers.

During the summer following their graduation from high school, each first-year student is given an iPad, which is included in the cost of tuition and is theirs to keep upon graduation from Hood. Prior to the start of fall orientation, all first-year students download and read a common book, selected by members of the Hood community, and during orientation, they meet in small, faculty- and staff-led groups to discuss the themes and important ideas within the book and get to know each other. Several special events are scheduled that relate to each year’s book, including movies, lectures and panel discussions, and are held throughout the fall semester, culminating in a visit from the author. On the day of the visit, students are able to meet with the author and attend a public lecture and book signing.

This year’s selection was Positive, a memoir in which author Paige Rawl depicted her experiences with stereotypes and bullying after revealing to a friend in middle school that she had been born with HIV. The book allowed a great opportunity for incoming freshmen to reflect on their own experiences with bullying and prejudice and think about how to put their best foot forward in their new community. Paige Rawl visited campus on Oct. 19.

In addition to the First-Year Read, Hood College has developed an interdisciplinary First-Year Seminar program to help new students hone their research, critical thinking and writing skills. Each seminar is capped at 15 students, allowing professors to really get to know the each student and serve as their mentors during their first semester. The seminars are required core courses for students in the fall of their freshman year, and each one is an in-depth exploration of a specific topic. For more information and to view this year’s list of topics, please visit the First-Year Seminar section of Hood’s website.
