Welcome Back! September News and Updates

September 1, 2016  |  News  |  No Comments

Welcome back to school and back to Hood’s Counselor Connection! Last week, we welcomed 222 freshmen and nearly 100 transfer students to our campus with four days of orientation activities, culminating in our annual opening convocation ceremony and picnic on the residential quad.

It’s exciting to see campus bustling with students again, and we can’t wait to start reading applications for the Hood College Class of 2021! Earlier this year, we made the decision to become Common App exclusive, and we’re looking forward to the ease that this transition will bring to the college admission process for our prospective students (and their counselors!). Additionally, we are once again 100 percent test optional, so no incoming students are required to submit SAT or ACT scores.

As in previous years, we do not have an application fee, so please encourage any interested seniors to apply for admission to Hood without concern for the expense! We will begin evaluating prospective students on a rolling basis later this month and continue throughout the school year. Once an application is submitted, students can expect both an admission decision and, in many cases, a financial award package within two to three weeks.

Our holistic review process takes into account everything that a student sends to us, and we welcome additional letters of recommendation, portfolio pieces, or other unique contributions to a student’s application. To supplement students’ Common Applications and help get to know them a little better, we have partnered with ZeeMee, a free online service that allows students to submit a video profile with their application and find other students who share their interests and hobbies. We’re excited for the opportunity that ZeeMee provides for us to gain insight into our applicants’ personalities, especially for students who are unable to come to campus for a personal interview!

What would you like to see in future editions of the Counselor Connection? Let us know in the comments or by emailing Whitney Yount at yount@hood.edu.

Have a great school year!

Fall Visit Opportunities

September 1, 2016  |  Events  |  No Comments

As we get back into the swing of the school year, we’re continuing to improve our programming in the Office of Admission to ensure that every student who comes to campus has a productive and enjoyable visit. This semester, we’re offering a number of visit opportunities both throughout the week and on weekends in order to accommodate all of our prospective students’ needs.

Weekday Visits

Weekday visits are offered twice-daily, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., and include a student-led tour and an appointment with one of our admission counselors.

Saturday Visits

Hood College is open on many Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Saturday visits include a group presentation and a student-led tour. This semester, Saturday visits will be held on the following dates:

  • October 1 and 22

  • November 5 and 19

“Blazer for a Day” Campus Visits

“Blazer for a Day” is an extended visit option that allows students to sit in on a class of their choosing, eat lunch in the dining hall, take a student-led tour of campus, and meet with an admission counselor. Visits are customizable, and can include meetings with the financial aid department, professors, or coaches, among other options.

Fall Open Houses

This fall, we will have two open houses for high school students in all grades to attend. Current students, faculty and staff members will be on hand to talk to students and their families about academics, life on campus, the financial aid process and anything else that you want to know more about. Campus tours will be offered throughout the event.
